Talismans are small objects worn to ward off evil, harm or illness or to bring good fortune. The sacred power of the talismans is thought to be created by the mystical power of the incantation transferred to the objects. The procedure of making a talisman involves the inscription of sacred letters onto the surface of different objects, such as silver, gold, lead, white cloth, red cloth, paper or leaves and the consecration of the object through incantation.
There are many different types of talismans today and they can be classified as follows:
1. Objects sanctified by inscription
- Ta-Krud: Usually, such an object is made of a metal like
lead, silver or copper. After the metals are inscribed with sacred letters,
they are rolled into a cylinder-shaped figure. A person wears this kind of
talisman on their neck, arms or hips for protection. Some even believe that
this talisman can make the person who wears it invulnerable to all harm.
- Pra-Jead cloth: Generally it is either white or red cloth with sacred writing on it. It is either rolled and made into a circular shape to put on the head, or folded into a triangular shape to hang at the hip. It is believed that this type of talisman works as a shield against invisible dangers. It also helps the wearer. WEARER become invulnerable to all kinds of weapons. Many people today wear this talisman, believing that it will bring them good fortune.
2. Natural sacred objects include such items as ‘Kod’, plant seeds or animal eggs that transform into pebbles, Cat’s-eye gem, deer horn, wild-boar tooth or hollowed tiger fang. This type of talisman is believed to protect people from virtually all types of danger. Very rarely, a person also fits into this category and he is called ‘Kon Phom Yoong’.
- ‘Khon Phom Yoong’ (A messy haired person) is a person whose very fine hair is interwoven like the nest of weaver birds. Such people are believed to have supernatural powers from birth and cannot be harmed by any weapons. If they die, their hair will not decompose and remain its shape and form whoever has their hair in his or her possession will be blessed with prosperity and invincibility (Such as Ithi’s hair in the scene that Yai asks for his hair for worshiping.)
- ‘Lek Lai’ (Magical metal amulet) is a naturally found metal said to possess supernatural powers against evil elements and life-threatening situations. It is found mostly on mountains or in caves. People believe that there are two kinds of Lek Lai: the male and the female. The male Lek Lai’s color is black mixed with very dark green, and the female Lek Lai is black mixed with red. Unlike other metallic elements, Lek Lai can’t be found using ordinary excavation methods; it requires a sacred incantation. Today, many people have Lek Lai inserted into their bodies because they believe it helps make the body not susceptible to attack from any weapons. Some also keep Lek Lai to protect themselves from evil, dangers or attacks from weapons.
There are many more talismans, but we can’t tell all their stories here. Since ancient times, people who practice Vedas have searched for talismans from different gurus, thinking that these talismans possess supernatural powers like the Vedas. The more talismans one has in one’s possession, the more power one has to create prosperity or gain protection from all threats.
- ‘Mead Mhor’ (Sacred dagger) is another popular talisman. It is made of a naturally found element. Once made into a two-edged knife, it is consecrated by inscribing Yantra letters and chanting incantations. Not only is this type of talisman used to combat ghosts or black magic, it also protects the owner from all evil elements because of its unique power in fighting evil spells.
The people who practiced Vedas in the past were mostly warriors, whose qualities can still be seen in those who practice Vedas today.
1. They are people who have learned to use different branches of Vedas to accomplish their desired goals.
2. The body is tattooed with sacred words to help them memorize the incantation and protect them from dangers. For example, the tattoo would enable them to have Invulnerability that all weapons are unable to cut or puncture through or bulletproofed skin, etc.
3. They usually have different kinds of talismans to protect themselves and make them invulnerable to being harmed.
4. They have an ability to communicate with ghosts or spirits and use them in different rituals. For example, ghosts can be sent to kill or harm their enemies prior to battle or during battle, etc.
Beside the above characteristics, those who practice Vedas can also perform the rituals by using incantations for the following purposes.
1. Using an incantation for black magic: black magic originated in ancient Egypt, and was then introduced into India and Thailand respectively. It is a ritual that aims to influence others to become under one’s control. With the use of black magic, one is able to make people fall deeply in love with them or make them sick, crippled or even dies.
- ‘Khun Sai’ (The evil sorcery) is the use of incantations to attack others. For example, one can use an incantation to mysteriously send objects such as hair, animal skins, razors or nails into the body of an opponent and make them suffer or die.
- ‘Khun Phee’ (The ghostly sorcery) is the use of incantations to command evil ghosts or spirits to attack others. For example, one can communicate with the ghosts and make them haunt enemies or make them sick or even kill them.
The use of black magic today is quite varied. For instance, one can use a fetish in the form of a male doll and a female doll, tied together face to face, and then performs an incantation for 7 nights. This will result in the couple which the dolls symbolize falling in love with each other.
2. Ghost enslaving: Some people enslave ghosts in their house so they can watch over the property for them. Moreover, ghosts can protect their owners from black magic by others. The way to get control over these ghosts is to please them by offering them the remains of someone who died tragically, such as in an accident, or from a stillborn baby. Using these remains as the medium, one can recite the incantation to communicate with the ghosts and ask them to accept these ’delicacies’. . Once the ghosts are under control, they can be ordered to fulfill any task – but after finishing the task these ghosts have to be kept under control. The types of ghosts that people enslave include:
- ‘Kumarn Thong’ (Great child ghost) is an infant who died
either inside or outside the womb. It is very small; sometimes even the size
of a finger, but it has all the human characteristics. It is believed that
Kumarn Thong has inherent supernatural powers which can do both good and harm
to human beings. The person who decides to keep him must know how to use incantations
to both release him and bring him back. Furthermore, Kumarn Thong has to be
well fed with food and other offerings. He is a popular ghost to adopt because
he can protect people in their homes from virtually all dangers and can also
foretell the future.
- ‘Kwai Dhanu’ (Combating buffalo) and ‘Mha Phee’ (Hellish
dog): This fetish is made by carving the bones or horns of a buffalo which
has been struck dead by lightning into the image of a buffalo. Inside the
image are pieces of bone or hairs of dead people. Then the carved buffalo
is consecrated and becomes a powerful object that can harm both ghosts and
humans. The owner must recite a specific spell to communicate with the buffalo
to order it to attack the opponent. But if the opponent has stronger powers,
the buffalo can be captured and used to harm its owner instead.
According to the Mystical Veda scripture, there are numerous types of incantations and those who practice them believe that they can make literally everything happen through the power of Vedas, even miracles such as controlling wind or rain and walking in the air. Whenever there is a talisman known to possess divine or supernatural power, interested parties will try hard to get hold of it to become the one with the most powerful Vedas. Vedas were therefore very popular with armies in the past. . The use of Vedas was believed to be a crucial weapon in all battles.
When fights between people with Vedas occur, the first goal each side must achieve is to subvert the Veda’s power or to destroy their opponent’s talismans. One way to achieve this is to ask a menstruating woman to sit on the sacred object or somehow get the opponent under a woman’s skirt. According to ancient beliefs, female menses and skirts are considered inferior or filthy and completely destroy the purity of anything sacred including the power of Vedas in a person.
Moreover, the winner can take the loser’s talisman and augment his own power, making him a more formidable opponent in the future.
Very few people these days are expert in occultism, perhaps due to its ephemeral and abstract nature. Even though scientists can go some way in explaining the mental powers which occur in each individual, the effects of such power on others are still far beyond any scientific explanation.
